It was a violent period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">The situation has greatly<strong> improved since 2007<\/strong> (under President&nbsp;Uribe)<\/span>. More than once, people have looked at me like I\u2019m crazy when I tell them I live there, and my grandmother nearly handcuffed me to the radiator when I decided to take my first backpacking trip there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>But where does this &#8220;James Bond\u2019s vilain&#8221; reputation come from?<\/strong> Why do government websites often present it as an &#8220;Are you sure you want to go there?&#8221; destination?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let me explain it all to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Colombia\u2019s Armed Conflict<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Colombia is a relatively young country, born in the 19th century, but deeply marked by enormous social inequalities inherited from colonization. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/cpt.org\/2021\/07\/06\/colombia-land-ownership-mother-all-conflicts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"94842\"><strong>0.44% of landowners own 40.1% of the land.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Add to that extreme tensions between the <strong>conservative and liberal parties<\/strong> over the first 150 years\u2014so intense that conflicts were often settled with machetes. The assassination of political figures, particularly on the liberal side, like <a href=\"https:\/\/colombiareports.com\/jorge-eliece-gaitan\/\" data-lasso-id=\"94099\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Jorge Gait\u00e1n<\/strong><\/a>, fueled these tensions and sparked a civil war known as &#8220;La Violencia.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that&#8217;s where everything went off the rails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/justiceforcolombia.org\/about-colombia\/colombian-armed-conflict\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"94843\"><strong>Colombia\u2019s armed conflict<\/strong><\/a> officially began in 1964 when the FARC and ELN guerrilla groups were formed. These groups, inspired by leftist ideologies, sought to challenge the government and the country\u2019s socio-economic disparities. The conflict escalated with the emergence of paramilitary forces in the 1980s, who were supported by landowners, business leaders, and even elements of the Colombian Army. The violence became widespread, with both sides committing severe human rights abuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-transform:uppercase\"><strong>Cartels and cocaine<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tomplanmytrip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Pablo-Escobar-Painting-Botero.jpg\" alt=\"Pablo Escobar Painting Botero\" class=\"wp-image-72418\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tomplanmytrip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Pablo-Escobar-Painting-Botero.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.tomplanmytrip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Pablo-Escobar-Painting-Botero-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tomplanmytrip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Pablo-Escobar-Painting-Botero-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But that&#8217;s not all! <strong>In the late 1970s, Colombia witnessed the massive arrival of cocaine<\/strong> and the birth of two powerful cartels: <strong>Medell\u00edn<\/strong> and <strong>Cali<\/strong>. Coca cultivation took place in remote areas, often controlled by guerrillas or paramilitaries, creating a complex web of alliances and rivalries. <strong>Territorial wars became the norm<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the late 1980s, the Colombian government decided to take serious action against <strong>Pablo Escobar<\/strong> and signed an extradition agreement with the United States. <strong>In response, the Medell\u00edn cartel reacted violently, assassinating police officers and orchestrating bombings across the country<\/strong>. This escalation of violence plunged Colombia into a new phase of chaos, adding another layer of complexity to an already intense conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-transform:uppercase\"><strong>After Pablo Escobar<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Paradoxically, after <strong>Pablo Escobar&#8217;s<\/strong> <strong>death in 1993<\/strong>, the situation worsened. <strong>The serpent lost its head, but the drug market became a battlefield<\/strong> for those vying for control. The guerrillas continued to finance their activities through kidnappings, targeting the wealthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2002, <strong>\u00c1lvaro Uribe<\/strong> became president and launched a ruthless offensive against the guerrillas. The latter were given free rein to commit atrocities, marking a dark period with massive human rights violations, until the so-called &#8220;demobilization&#8221; of the paramilitaries in 2005.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Starting in 2007<\/strong>, <strong>the situation began to improve gradually<\/strong>. Violence decreased, no more bombs and kidnappings, and the first tourists began to discover the natural and cultural treasures <strong><a data-lasso-id=\"94103\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomplanmytrip.com\/what-is-colombia-known-for\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"47470\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">that Colombia has to offer.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, where did the bad guys go? What happened to the guerrillas, the paramilitaries, and the traffickers? And what about the cocaine?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-transform:uppercase\"><strong>Where are the bad guys now?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It would be misleading to say that the guerrillas and paramilitaries have vanished, but their presence has significantly diminished. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nowadays, they prefer to operate quietly, focusing on drug trafficking, which remains prevalent in Colombia. The state\u2019s military presence has strengthened, and <strong>since the 2016 peace accords with the FARC<\/strong>, many regions have opened up to tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a traveler, you won\u2019t notice anything about this underground economy, and it won\u2019t impact your vacation at all. The guerrillas, paramilitaries, and drug traffickers have no interest in you. For example, if you\u2019re blonde and tall, you\u2019ll naturally stand out. But don\u2019t worry\u2014just avoid showing that you\u2019re a &#8220;juicy papaya&#8221; full of money. Leave your jewelry at home and don\u2019t flash your latest iPhone around all the time. Keep it tucked away in your pocket and only use it when necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If I need to take photos or check Google Map<\/strong>s, I like to look around first and make sure I hold my phone securely to avoid snatch-and-grab thefts. This often happens from motorcycles, so it&#8217;s better to step away from the street a bit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also <strong>avoid walking down side streets once night falls<\/strong>, unless I know the neighborhood well. This rule even applies in wealthy areas because thieves know that\u2019s where the best &#8220;papayas&#8221; are\u2014and these streets are often empty since they\u2019re residential. If it\u2019s a zone with bars and restaurants, like Poblado, La 70, or Primer Parque in Medell\u00edn, then it\u2019s fine as long as the businesses are still open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another option is to only go out with cash and an old phone (you can buy a local SIM card for a few dollars to get internet). That way, if anything happens, you won\u2019t lose much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But honestly, the best way to get around in a big city is to <strong>use UBER<\/strong>. It\u2019s cheap, easy to use, and it\u2019s what I usually do when I\u2019m in a large city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-transform:uppercase\"><strong>How much is it?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tomplanmytrip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Raquira-Boyaca-Santander-Colombia-1.jpg\" alt=\"Raquira Boyaca &amp; Santander Colombia (1)\" class=\"wp-image-92920\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tomplanmytrip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Raquira-Boyaca-Santander-Colombia-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.tomplanmytrip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Raquira-Boyaca-Santander-Colombia-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tomplanmytrip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Raquira-Boyaca-Santander-Colombia-1-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, let\u2019s take a look at some of the most common scams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, <strong>I always ask the price before ordering anything,<\/strong> because prices are often not displayed in <strong>Colombia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is especially true for taxis without meters (like in <strong>Cartagena<\/strong> or <strong>Santa Marta<\/strong>) and restaurants that don\u2019t give you a menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why you should at least learn the phrase &#8220;\u00bf<strong>Cu\u00e1nto cuesta<\/strong>?&#8221; (how much) and the numbers + a few amounts (10, 20, 50, 100, 1000, 1000000).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll use big numbers, so it\u2019s easy to get confused\u2014or be tricked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for souvenir shops, you can try to haggle a bit: &#8220;\u00bf<strong>Y a cu\u00e1nto me lo dejas?<\/strong>&#8221; (How much will you let it go for?). You might get a 10-20% discount sometimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"out\" style=\"text-transform:uppercase\"><strong>Should you take this taxi?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tomplanmytrip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Taxi-in-Envigado-near-Medellin-Antioquia-Colombia.jpg\" alt=\"Taxi in Envigado near Medellin Antioquia Colombia\" class=\"wp-image-83297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tomplanmytrip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Taxi-in-Envigado-near-Medellin-Antioquia-Colombia.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.tomplanmytrip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Taxi-in-Envigado-near-Medellin-Antioquia-Colombia-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tomplanmytrip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Taxi-in-Envigado-near-Medellin-Antioquia-Colombia-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Another issue is with taxis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve taken hundreds of street taxis in Colombia without ever having a problem\u2014except occasionally getting overcharged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there are <strong>fake taxis <\/strong>that pick up passengers only to rob them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For added safety<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">, I recommend taking offici<\/span>al taxis (if available) when leaving airports, <strong>especially in&nbsp;Bogot\u00e1.<\/strong> Alternatively, you can simply book private transportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And I always use <strong>Uber<\/strong> when heading home after a night out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the simplest option is to avoid taking street taxis altogether (even though in 99.99% of cases, nothing will happen). Use an app or ask your restaurant or hotel to call a cab for you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In villages, apps don\u2019t work.
