The EID is involved in several wars and the products developed by this company can be found throughout most of the globe. Today, the business is consolidated. EID, an R&D ccompany specializing in military communications has reached in 2000 the highest turnover ever: near 17 million USD, 36,3% of this amount referring to sales in the foreign market. These excellent results are due to the financial clearance, to the entrance of capital from the German company Rohde&Schwarz, to the company's reorganization, and to the performance of the communication systems units, mainly in the naval field. As far as R&D activity is concerned, EID carried out an investment of 2 million USD. More than 80% was applied to the development of the radio software GRC525, equipment for infantry units. On the business units of communication systems, the company was focused on the market of permanent defence communication systems particularly in what concerns the conclusion of the SICOM project- the integrated system of communications of the Armed Forces. Still concerning Defense, EID prosecute in the implementation of the processing military messages systems (MMHS) in the Air Force, Navy and EMGFA. Concerning the civilian market, the contracts to provide VTS (Vessel Traffic Service) systems for the shores in Setúbal and Leixões were conclude with success. On other hand, in four of the publics contests in this market three were granted to EID. However the company's jewel is naval communications, the integrated communications control systems (ICCS). In fact, this product was accepted for the Dutch Navy LCF frigates of the category of "De Zeven Provizien" and for the first frigate Álvaro de Bazan, built at this moment by the Spanish Navy. "It must be observed that in both cases, these are highly sophisticated war vessels, conceived to perform missions of naval command and anti-aircraft defence, which demonstrates the project complexity", states Marcos Lopes, President of EID. In this activity branch, not only was the logistical support ship Castilla- similar to those that the Portuguese Navy intends to built in near future- delivered to the Spanish Navy, but EID was also chosen by the Brazilian Navy to perform the services for the integration of communications systems on the sloop Barroso. In the national market, the company provide the engineering services to the Portuguese Navy. However, the second version of the GRC 525 is already finished, with the equipment tests in the field, to be run by the Portuguese Army. Mass production will start this year, at a speed of 100 units by month. Finally, EID gave the first steps towards the development of a new communications series in the HF frequency, meant for the re-equipment of Portuguese Navy units.
