Edisoft: a multifarious company of the Portuguese military
www.edisoft.pt

Edisoft was created in order to run to maintenance on Portuguese Navy frigates. Fourteen years later, the company developed into other areas beyond defence systems. Earth is now too small for its aspirations.

Today Edisoft has several projects that go far beyond the defence systems that were behind its creation, operating in different areas such as transports (air, maritime and terrestrial), crude oil distribution and logistical systems. Edisoft has terminated the development of the HI-LOG project (software for improved management of company resources in the areas of harbours, airports, naval construction, transport companies and other industries) and is now developing two versions for specific clients (HLIMS and SLSIMS).

Edisoft is also participating in EGNOS and GALILEO (projects of the European Spatial Agency, whose aim is the independence from American and Russian satellite systems), beyond other projects for ESA, like POLARIS and ADVISOR. In a national consortium, and under the auspices of EUMETSAT, Edisoft is developing the LANDSAF project for the Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia (National Weather Institute), the purpose of which is to collect, process and distribute meteorological information obtained by satellite to the international community. Also noteworthy, and also 2 the AeroSpace area, is the association with the recently created Portugal Space, which will include a satellite tracking station to be located in the Azores, the purpose of which is to monitor the Atlantic, the Iberian peninsula and part of North Africa. In this partnership, EDISOFT will be fully in charge of the Navigation area, being responsible for the development of value added products and services in this domain.

Recently, it started to develop a Control and Command System for the Comissão Nacional de Planeamento Civil de Emergência (Portuguese Emergency Civil Planning Commission), in order to provide this Entity (and its 13 sub-commissions), with a coordinated system of strategical information for decision-making in emergency situations.

It is presently participating in the European project CASH, of which it is the focal point for Portugal, a concurrent engineering project for the aeronautical industry. Its secondary objective is to make the technological results of the project known across the Portuguese business world.

According to the company's president, Parreira de Campos, the new projects under development are: LIGGIA (a command and control console for military and civilian use), that is now being negotiated with the Portuguese Navy and for civilian purposes with Portuguese, Greek and Kuwait airlines, the automation of the naval platforms system (in cooperation with the naval construction works of Viana do Castelo and EID), for the construction of patrol ships in Portugal; and several applications for the HI-LOG system.

As a result of the decisions already made in the Lei de Programação Militar (Portuguese military planning and regulation), it has begun its participation in the projects for the helicopters NH-90 (Army) and Westland EH-101 (Air Force), with significant involvement in the development of onboard software, Electronic Technical Publications, inclusion of the HLIMS product and, most importantly of all, software for the RTM engines that equip both models.

At EU level, Edisoft participates in several international consortiums that develop projects in several different areas as telematic health systems, traffic management in airports or solution for the monitorization of natural disasters.
Leading markets
Nowadays 90% of Edisoft capitals are owned in equal shares between NAV-Air Navigation, Empordef - Portuguese company for defence, and Thales Nederlands (ex-Thomson - CSF/Signaal), being the remaining 10% owned by company's collaborators. However, the capital structure is being altered. The objectif is to ensure more solid strategical options of development.

After in 2001 Edisoft had a business volume of 3,5 hundred thousand Euro. For the present, Parreira dos Santos, raises high the limit line for 9 hundred thousand Euro. The Export volume represents a third of the company's total invoice, being Holland, Greece and Turkey the main export markets. Edisoft expects this tendency to increase in 2002. Among the main partnerships of Edisoft, it includes national companies (such as, OGMA, EID, Oracle Portugal, Estaleiros Navais de Viana do Castelo), as well as several international companies (Alcatel, Transics, Indra Espacio, GMV, Vega, Raytheon and Lockeed Martin, among others).

Edisoft's strategy for international development has two main goals: first, on the production level, the "participation in local companies" is previewed in Brazil, Spain and France, as stated by Parreira de Campos. Brazil continues to deserve special atention, "insofar as Edisoft's participation will be made through a consortium with one major European company, and it will allow an important enforcement of the participation in valuable international consortiums".
